Eye Gasims
**warning long post ahead**

so in case you didn't know i have a degree in modern dance. when i tell people this they fake that they know what i mean. they say things like "ooohh" and "wow that's cool". then you meet people who say "what is modern dance?" or "you mean like a stripper?". seriously if i had a dollar for every time i had been asked if i was a stripper...well i'd have at least 20 bucks. so i have compiled some modern dance pieces for your viewing pleasure...or disdain.


this is my very favorite dance company Momix. i have had 2 teachers that were in this company. they are very theatrical and use lots of props. i've seen almost every one of their shows. this is from their newest one called "lunar sea". it's done almost entirely in black light- which let me tell you was a shocker to the retinas.





this is another momix video from a show called "opus cactus" this is my favorite momix show. i've seen it twice.






this is "night journey" by the glorious martha graham. she is one of the pioneers of modern dance. she was totally nuts but fabulous at the same time. actually the whole graham "family" if you will is crazy. pearl lang (a living former company member) has been known to show up to performances of martha's works and throw eggs and boo. we recreated a graham piece in college and were all sort of secretly hoping she'd show up. i was once told by a classmate that they could see me being like martha when i'm older. i tool it as both an insult and a compliment. after all she performed until she was 76! if you think this looks easy you are wrong. martha developed her own technique that takes years to master. plus this piece features my favorite graham move the "claw your eyes out". so dramatic!





this is a company called bodyvox. i saw this video at a performance of theirs in nyc. i thought it so funny. they use a lot of multi media and dance films.



this is a super famous piece called "caught". it is by david parsons. i'm not going to tell you how it's done because once i do it will ruin the illusion.
