family secrets

so last friday patrick and i watched the new show "who do you think you are?" in this series celebrities get a tailor made trip to find out where they come from. they get their family tree researched by professional geneological experts. this made me want to do my tree. i really know nothing about my moms side of the family and just a smidge about my dads. so i joined ancestry.com and started researching. i have been able to trace my dads side to the 1800s when they immigrated to the united states. my mom's side is a bust. my mom never knew much about her grandparents. she remembers their names and that's pretty much it. the thing is when that's all you know you're not going to find anything.

the annoying thing is patrick started looking up his too and struck gold! the other night after i went to bed he couldn't fall asleep and started looking stuff up. well, he found some "hints" that linked him with other peoples tree. next thing you know he has traced his dads dads side back to the 1500s! to top it off one of his ancestors pretty much fathered quebec so he's a distant relative of madonna, camilla parker-bowles, hilary clinton, and celine dion.

this is both aggravating and hilarious! celine! i hate celine! yes, i own the dvd of her vegas show but, that's because one of my favorite choreographers did it. yes, i own a cd of hers as well but it was the 90s when i bought it. but madonna now that's freaking awesome! hilary and camilla i could really care less about. sorry ladies. i can also say that i have yet to find any family names i want to revive. (except celine dion) hopefully my mom can find the family trees she thinks we have somewhere. otherwise i might just have to hold out and hope that i win the contest to get it done for you.

further plans for today include making red velvet cupcakes, going head to head with a kindergartner, teaching, and watching a movie.

song lyrics of the day:
near,
far,
wherever you are,
i believe that the heart does go on

oscars

i liked the oscars last night. yes, we fast forwarded lots but i loved steve martin and alec baldwin. i thought neil patrick harris was dumb and sounded awful. i got teary at the john hughes tribute. i'm a huge fan, i have a giant pretty in pink poster hanging in our house. i liked the set and i liked that they kept it moving for the most part.

i did not make it to as many movies as i had hoped. mostly because i'm broke and when i don't have to work i just want to sit around in my pajamas. yesterday, we did venture out and saw crazy heart. it was between that and up in that air. i made the call however to go see a movie that's actually going to win. plus we later found out that up in the air comes out on dvd tomorrow so we were glad we didn't spend $30 on it. i liked it. i really liked the soundtrack. i still really want to see an education. that's probably next for me in the theatre.

after i see the rest of the nominees i will comment on the actor/actress/supporting/best picture. i don't get a vote so obviously the academy doesn't know that my opinion does in fact matter. i did notice that it seemed like a lot of war/action movies were winning. the hurt locker did clean up. don't get me started on sandra bullock.

on to the dresses. can i just say i was underwhelmed! i hated most of them. i at one point turned to patrick and said is it bad that i think miley cyrus looked the best? many of the dresses i liked the top or bottom but not the whole thing. did you notice all the women with precious wore blue? i think it was a nod to the novel's author sapphire. here's who i liked.

rachel mcadams

demi moore

vera farmiga

miley cyrus

elizabeth banks

maggie gylnnhaall

cameron diaz
